Grief Comparison Grief is a multifaceted response to loss, particularly to the loss of someone or something to which a bond was formed. Although conventionally focused on the emotional response to loss, it also has physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, spiritual, and philosophical dimensions. The main characters of both stories are grief stricken due to the loss of a loved one. Hamlet is suffering the loss of his father, King Hamlet of Denmark, who he believes was murdered by his own brother Claudius. Samuel Johnson is suffering the loss of his wife. People deal with grief in many different ways. Both characters had behavioral or cognitive changes and questioned their spirituality while dealing with such a heavy loss but acted on it in different ways. After his father’s death Hamlet allows his grief to consume his life. He wants others to believe he is going mad but it is turning into a reality. Because his mind is in such a fragile state he believes his father’s ghost spoke to him and revealed that Claudius murdered him in order to take over the throne and marry mother Gertrude. â€Å"The serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears the crown.† (Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, pp. 325). He begins to plot his revenge but questions if Claudius and his mother are actually guilty and if so he can follow through with the task of murdering Claudius given by the ghost of his father.
